Capacitors are small, cheap, and easy to overlook — until one fails and your AC won't start on a 95-degree afternoon. They're also one of the most common reasons we get called out for a "no cool air" emergency, especially on units that sit in direct sun or run hard all summer. Here's what a capacitor does, how to spot a failing one, and why we often recommend upgrading to a long-life part when we replace one.
What a Capacitor Actually Does
The run capacitor is what gets your compressor, condenser fan, and blower motor started and keeps them running efficiently once they're going. Standard run capacitors are rated for roughly 6,000–10,000 hours of life at their rated voltage and temperature, which works out to anywhere from 5 to 20 years in the real world depending on heat exposure, voltage spikes, and how hard the system runs. They don't usually fail all at once — capacitance (measured in microfarads, or µF) drops gradually, and the motor it powers starts working harder to compensate long before it fails outright.
Signs Your Capacitor Is Failing
A few symptoms show up again and again on service calls:
- The unit hums but the compressor or fan doesn't start
- The compressor or fan starts slowly, or seems to struggle before catching
- Energy bills creeping up with no other explanation, from a motor working harder than it should
- Visible bulging or leaking on the capacitor's case — this one's not subtle, and it means it's already failed
If you're hearing a hum without a startup, don't keep cycling the system — that's the motor trying (and failing) to draw enough current, and it's putting extra strain on the compressor with every attempt.
Checking Capacitor Health
Technicians test a capacitor with a multimeter in capacitance mode and compare the reading against the µF rating printed on the case. Once the measured capacitance drops more than about 10% below rating, it's due for replacement. Capacitors can hold a charge even after the system is powered off, so this isn't a DIY test we'd recommend — if you suspect a capacitor issue, it's a quick, inexpensive thing for us to check and confirm during a service visit.
Standard vs. Long-Life Capacitors
"Lifetime" isn't an official industry term, but when people ask about it, they usually mean a long-life or high-temperature capacitor — typically rated for 105°C instead of the standard 85°C, with higher ripple tolerance built in. They cost more than a basic OEM replacement, but they hold up noticeably better in units that run hot or sit in direct sun, which describes a lot of rooftop and tight condenser-closet installs around Charlotte.
Why We Recommend the Upgrade
When we're already replacing a capacitor, a long-life upgrade is usually worth the small difference in cost:
- Fewer failures and service calls. Capacitors are often the first thing to fail in a system, especially in units exposed to heat and sun. A 105°C-rated part handles that stress better.
- Protects the compressor. A weak capacitor forces the compressor to strain on every startup, drawing excess current each cycle. That strain adds up and can shorten the life of the compressor — which is a far more expensive repair than a capacitor.
- More consistent efficiency. As capacitance drops, motors draw more current for the same output. A long-life capacitor holds its rated µF longer, keeping the system closer to its designed efficiency.
- Lower cost over time. The upfront difference is small compared to the cost of an emergency mid-summer service call — which is usually what a capacitor failure turns into if it's not caught early.
- Better tolerance for voltage fluctuations, which helps in areas with unstable power or frequent surges.
One Caveat
A long-life capacitor won't prevent every failure — capacitors are a wear item, and any capacitor will eventually need replacing. What the upgrade buys you is a longer interval between replacements and better odds of avoiding a failure during peak cooling season, not a guarantee against it.
